Jobs for Felons in Iowa

As far as we can find, Iowa has no statewide ban-the-box law for public or private employers. An employer can ask about your record on the application. Some Iowa cities may have their own rules; we have not verified them, so check with your city. Plan how you will answer before you apply.

Under federal law, a background check company can report a conviction no matter how old it is. Arrests that did not lead to a conviction generally drop off after seven years (the limit does not apply to jobs paying $75,000 a year or more). We found no Iowa law that shortens that for convictions.

As far as we can find, Iowa has no general way to expunge a felony conviction. The main path for an adult conviction is a one-time misdemeanor expungement. Once more than 8 years have passed since the conviction, with no pending charges, no more than one earlier deferred judgment, and every fine, fee and restitution paid, the court must grant it. You get it once in your life.

Many misdemeanors are excluded, including OWI (drunk driving), domestic abuse assault, sex offenses, harassment and stalking. An expunged misdemeanor is closed to the public and removed from the state criminal history files that background checks draw on.

If every charge in a case was dismissed or you were found not guilty, the court must expunge the case once 180 days have passed and the court costs are paid.

If you got a deferred judgment and finished probation, the court record of that case is expunged once your restitution, fines and court costs are paid. Who can get a deferred judgment changed in 2026, so ask a lawyer about that part.

An Iowa licensing board can deny you over a conviction only if the offense directly relates to the job and creates an unreasonable risk to public safety. It cannot deny you over an arrest with no conviction, or over a vague “good character” or “moral turpitude” standard. Each board must publish the list of convictions that can disqualify you. Teacher licensing follows its own rules.

Five years after your release, with no new crime, the board must presume you are rehabilitated. That presumption does not cover forcible felonies, domestic abuse assault, sexual abuse and some other listed offenses. You can ask a board ahead of time whether your record will block you, and the fee is capped at $25. Do it before you pay for training.

Federal EEOC guidance from 2012 warns employers that blanket “no felons” policies can violate Title VII, but since April 2025 a federal executive order has told agencies to deprioritize this kind of case. We found no Iowa law that stops a private employer from asking about or using a record, so your leverage is the licensing law, expungement where it applies, and picking the right employer.
